Laser dentisty is the lastest technology in dental care that offers several improvements in cavity detection and also in minimizing the pain associated with soft tissue management. At Deam Dental we are take optimal oral health seriously and we use two types of laser equipment. We us the Odessey for soft tissue management and the Diagnodent for cavity detection.
We invite you to read more about these advances.
Soft Tissue Laser--minimizes pain:
One of the most remarkable new technologies for dental patients is the soft tissue laser. These new lasers work with extremely low power to microscopically explode the cells of the tissue rather than the traditional cutting wound of a scalpel. The laser allows us to address many simple problems of the gums and surrounding tissues quickly and with almost no discomfort. These new lasers are so gentle that only topical anesthetic creams are necessary - no shots!
Our practice uses the Ivoclar Odessey soft tissue diode laser in periodontal therapy (gum disease), implant dentistry, and even those pesky mouth sores. The incredibly rapid healing, due to the gentle nature of the laser, eliminates the normal postoperative discomfort of traditional dental procedures. Soft tissue lasers are setting a new standard in fast, pain-free dentistry.
Diagnodent
In keeping with our goal to provide the best service and latest technology available, we are currently using a diagnostic laser for the detection of cavities called Diagnodent.
The Diagnodent, approved by the FDA for the detection of beginning stages of tooth decay, is a hand-held laser, similar to a laser pointer used for presentations. This device allows the dentist to decide if the cavitiy is incipient (just barely detectable). At this stage, a sealant (plastic coating) may be suggested to prevent the cavity from getting larger. If the cavity is found to be deeper, then a filling will be suggested to restore the tooth. Many times a tooth may be stained and appear to be a cavity, but actually is just discoloration.
The Diagnodent has also been approved for the dection of cavities by the ADA (American Dental Association).
Radiographs (x-rays) are necessary for diagnosing cavities on the surfaces between the teeth, where the dentist cannot feel nor see. However, the new Diagnodent "tool" is excellent for detecting cavities in the pits and fissures (holes and grooves) of the teeth.
The Diagnodent will be used in addition to radiographs (x-rays) for the diagnosis of cavities to ensure optimum dental diagnosis and care.
This procedure is provided as a service to our patients. Not every patient will require the use of this device - only areas that the hygienist or dentist has deemed suspicious of a possible cavity.
