Dentures are removable appliances that restore your smile by replacing missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. If you have lost many or all of your natural teeth, Dr. Raymond del Castillo and Dr. Douglas A. Deam may recommend dentures in Coral Gables, Florida. Replacing missing teeth with dentures will benefit your smile’s appearance and health. Dentures make it easier to eat and speak. Dentures can fill out the appearance of your face. There are two main types of dentures: complete and partial.

Complete dentures are either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made after any remaining teeth have been removed by our dentists and the gum tissue has begun to heal. A conventional denture is ready for placement about eight to twelve weeks after your teeth have been removed. Immediate dentures are made during a previous visit and can be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. The patient does not have to be without teeth during the healing period, but immediate dentures require more adjustments than conventional dentures. This is because the gums and bones shrink during the healing period. In many cases, immediate dentures are used as temporary dentures.

Partial dentures are used when one or more teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Removable partial dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base. This is held in place by a metal framework. A fixed partial denture is made of crowns with replacement teeth in between that are placed on the abutment teeth and cemented into place.
