Holiday Dentistry: The Causes of Halitosis

Posted .

An often-embarrassing oral health condition that arises is known as halitosis. Halitosis occurs when bacteria in your mouth produces a foul odor that can be difficult to treat effectively if you’re unaware of what the causes of it are.

Halitosis, also known as bad breath, can occur due to numerous causes. Foods and drinks, such as garlic, onions, and coffee, won’t necessarily harm your mouth, but they will affect the way your breath smells. However, bacteria can also result in unhealthy odors emanating from within your mouth. This can be caused by poor oral hygiene and excessive plaque build-up.

Furthermore, if you have dentures, it is important to always make sure they are clean so that contamination and bacterial buildup cannot occur. Other risk factors for halitosis include smoking and chewing tobacco, the presence of a dry mouth, gum disease, and underlying ailments deep within your body, such as liver or kidney problems and respiratory tract infections.
